After encountering garfish for the first time on a spontaneous snorkel in Skeleton Bay, I became inspired by their unconventional chins. I went home and painted three of them using solar dye, swimming above a stencil of seaweed I collected from the same area where I first saw them.
The fabric backdrop is hand-dyed using wire I found rusted by the sea, which reminded me of old fishing hooks. This felt particularly appropriate, as any local fisherman will tell you, garfish are 'good eatin'.
The result is a one-of-one textile piece celebrating one of my stranger new sea friends.
